Background of the Study

With the rapid expansion of telecommunications infrastructure, workers in the industry are increasingly exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile towers, antennas, and wireless communication devices. Long-term exposure to EMFs has raised health concerns, including headaches, sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment, and potential links to cancer (Adeyemi & Usman, 2023). While regulatory agencies have established safety limits for EMF exposure, many workers continue to work in high-radiation environments without adequate protective measures.

In Plateau State, telecommunications workers install, maintain, and repair mobile towers and network equipment, exposing them to varying levels of electromagnetic radiation. The lack of awareness and inconsistent adherence to safety guidelines increase potential health risks (Bello & Salisu, 2024).

This study aims to assess the impact of electromagnetic field exposure on the health of telecommunications workers in Plateau State, examining common health symptoms, risk levels, and possible interventions to minimize exposure.

Statement of the Problem

The long-term health effects of occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields remain a topic of debate. While some studies suggest that EMF exposure has minimal effects, others indicate increased risks of neurological disorders, fatigue, and even carcinogenic effects (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). Telecommunications workers in Plateau State frequently work in close proximity to high-frequency electromagnetic radiation without adequate monitoring or protective gear.

Despite global discussions on the health risks of EMF exposure, there is limited localized research assessing its effects on telecommunications workers in Plateau State. This study seeks to determine the extent of health risks, examine worker safety measures, and propose strategies for reducing occupational EMF exposure.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the health effects of electromagnetic field exposure on telecommunications workers in Plateau State.

2. To evaluate worker awareness and adherence to safety measures regarding EMF exposure.

3. To recommend strategies for reducing health risks associated with EMF exposure in telecommunications work.

Research Questions

1. What are the health effects of prolonged electromagnetic field exposure on telecommunications workers in Plateau State?

2. How aware are telecommunications workers of the potential risks associated with EMF exposure?

3. What measures can be implemented to reduce the health risks of EMF exposure in telecommunications work?

Research Hypotheses

1. Telecommunications workers in Plateau State experience significant health effects due to EMF exposure.

2. Low awareness of EMF risks contributes to increased exposure and health complications among telecommunications workers.

3. Implementing stricter safety protocols can reduce the health risks associated with EMF exposure.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on telecommunications workers in Plateau State, particularly those working with mobile towers, network installations, and repair services. Limitations may include variations in individual susceptibility to EMF exposure and the difficulty of measuring long-term health effects.

Definitions of Terms

• Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs): Invisible energy waves generated by electrical and wireless devices.

• Radiofrequency Radiation (RF): A type of electromagnetic radiation commonly emitted by mobile towers and antennas.

• Occupational Exposure: The level of contact workers have with potentially harmful environmental factors in their job.

• Safety Guidelines: Regulations and protocols designed to protect workers from occupational hazards.
